1. Shepherd’s Knoll
Shepherd’s Knoll is the first official stop on 17 Mile Drive. It offers elevated views of the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Peninsula.
This stop is named after Abraham D. Shepard, a key figure in the development of the area.
2. Huckleberry Hill
Huckleberry Hill provides a lush retreat with its groves of huckleberry bushes and towering Monterey pines.
This stop offers a serene environment, perfect for a short hike or a leisurely stroll among the native flora.
3. Spanish Bay
Spanish Bay Beach is a pristine stretch of shoreline known for its breathtaking views and serene ambiance.
Ideal for picnics and leisurely walks, the beach is also an excellent spot for watching the vibrant colors of a Pacific Ocean sunset.

4. The Restless Sea
This Restless Sea is known for its unusual and unpredictable wave patterns.
The swirling waves make it a favorite among photographers!
5. Point Joe

In the early days, sailors often mistook this rocky outcrop for the entrance to Monterey Bay, leading to several shipwrecks.

It smells pretty fishy (literally!) around here.
9. Fanshell Overlook

This area is temporarily closed during the pupping months to protect the seals and their young, ensuring their safety and minimal disturbance.

The Lone Cypress is my favorite stop on 17 Mile Drive, and the one I was looking forward to most!
Perched on a granite boulder in the Pacific Ocean, this resilient tree has been around for over 250 years.
It is only native to two places in the entire world (both in California): 17 Mile Drive and Point Lobos.
Fun Fact– The Lone Cypress has been the logo for Pebble Beach Resorts since 1919.
13. Ghost Trees
Ghost Tree is known for its eerie, wind-sculpted, bleached white trunks and branches that resemble ghosts against the horizon.
This unusual landscape is the result of harsh coastal conditions, where the salt-laden air and strong winds have shaped these dead cypresses.
14. Pebble Beach Visitor Center
The Pebble Beach Visitor Center provides an introduction to the 17 Mile Drive history and attractions.
It features free maps, interactive exhibits, and information displays to get you started on your trip.
The center also features a gift shop offering local souvenirs and memorabilia.
15. Pebble Beach Golf Links
Pebble Beach Golf Links is an iconic and challenging course that has hosted some of the most prestigious golf tournaments, like the U.S. Open.

Q: Is 17 Mile Drive on Highway 1?
Nope! Plug 17 mile drive into your GPS and it has its own starting point, just past Pacific Grove.
You will enter a ticket booth at the start of Pebble Beach.
Q: How many stops are on 17 Mile Drive?
A: 17 formal stops, but there are a couple of turnouts that are not labeled.
Not all stops are scenic, like the visitor’s center and golf course.
Q: Is it free?
A: No. The $11.25 entrance fee is collected by the private property of Pebble Beach, as this is the zone you are entering.
It is not covered by any of the California State Park passes.
After paying your entrance fee, you receive a pamphlet and map about the stops.
The $11.25 fee is waived if you are staying at one of the three Pebble Beach hotels (The Lodge, The Inn, or Casa Palmero) or if you spend $35 at a resort restaurant in Pebble Beach.
Q: Where else can I find similar views?
A: Many stops along Big Sur provide similar views, like Point Lobos Natural Reserve.
Q: Is it worth it?
A: Depends. It feels very touristy. Decide for yourself here.

A: Yes, you technically are allowed to bike 17 Mile Drive, but I would advise against it.
Bikers going up steep, winding hills with a line of cars behind them on a narrow one-way- I love biking, but pass for me. (I was super nervous just driving for this reason).
Q: Can you bring our motorcycle?
A: No. Motorcycles are strictly prohibited from entry on 17 Mile Drive.

Location: 17 Mile Drive refers to the coastal stretch atop the Monterey Peninsula between Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach.
It is 1 hour 45 minutes drive from San Francisco Airport.
When NOT to visit: Do not plan your visit when a golf tournament or special event is scheduled.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find parking, and crowds will take away from the views.
⭐Tip: Check the weather on a live golf cam before you leave to make sure it’s a clear day!
Time: You can complete 17-mile drive with quick stops at each of the 17 official stops, in 45 minutes.
To really enjoy your time, plan for 3 hours.
If you are a beach lover, you can spend a whole day at one of the 17 Mile Drive Beaches, but the beaches get really crowded on the weekends
Parking: There is a parking lot at every stop along the drive.
