Searching for the best things to do in Yauco, Puerto Rico?   This detailed guide has got you covered!

I recently visited Puerto Rico during one of my winter break trips and I am so thankful that I did.  I’m even more thankful that I got off the beaten path and discovered Yauco.

Located in the Southern mountain region of Puerto Rico, Yauco is not a town to be missed.  You can easily take a day trip from a larger town like Ponce or incorporate Yauco with a visit to Guanica.

Some of the best things to do in Yauco are La Escalinata de Yauco, Yaucromatic, Murals, Swing Ride on a Crochet Tree, Central Plaza, Lago Luchetti, Salto Santa Clara Waterfall, Drink Coffee, King’s Cream, and going to local shops and restaurants.

Wander around this vibrant town and explore to your heart’s content.  Let’s explore!

10 Things To Do in Yauco,  Puerto Rico

1. La Escalinata de Yauco

Colorful mural of traditional Taino symbols and patterns painted on a staircase in Yauco, Puerto Rico, with a statue of a proud figure standing at the top. This artistic landmark is a must-visit for its cultural significance and photo opportunity, representing one of the best things to do in Yauco.

The beautiful, vibrant black and yellow set of stairs draws you in as you make your way to the top. Each step of La Escalainata de Yauco is painted with geometric patterns and bold colors.

As you climb, you get closer to the stunning Yaucromatic.

Tip: There is a QR code for a Yaucromatic map located next to the yellow stairs.

Yaucromatic is the largest outdoor art gallery in Puerto Rico.  It was created as a restoration project after the devastating Hurricane Maria in 2017.

The project showcases over 30 colorful murals painted by talented local and international artists.

The artwork ranges from abstract patterns to representations of cultural heritage and daily life in Yauco, celebrating the town’s artistic spirit.

3. Murals

An urban street in Yauco comes alive with a mural of a green parrot and a butterfly, complemented by a canopy of colorful lanterns, symbolizing the vibrant art scene as one of the best things to do in Yauco.

An extension of Yaucromatic can be found through the beautiful murals located throughout Yauco!

My favorite is across the street from the treehouse swing and next to La Escalinata!  This mural was painted by Carlos Alberto.

His work captivates viewers with its intricate design and masterful use of color, capturing the cultural essence of Yauco.

4. Swing Ride on Crochet Tree

Two travelers enjoy a swing set under a kaleidoscopically crocheted tree, an example of vibrant street art in Puerto Rico, with a colorful mural in the background. This playful and picturesque spot is one of the best things to do in Yauco, offering a whimsical photo opportunity and a taste of local creative flair.

The incredibly vibrant crochet tree and swing are located at Placita Pablo “El Negro”.

This art installation is a part of Yaucromatic.

5. Central Plaza

Yauco’s central plaza is great for walking around, and it features the city’s beautiful church, Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario is notable not only for its architectural beauty but also for its historical significance in Yauco.

The Central Plaza itself is a lively space where locals and tourists gather, surrounded by cafes and small shops that offer local goods and treats.

Benches and shaded areas provide a perfect spot to relax under the Puerto Rican sun.

6. Lago Luchetti

Lago Luchetti is located within the Lago Luchetti Wildlife Reserve.  Some of the best outdoor activities here are hiking and camping.

The calm waters of the reservoir provide a perfect setting for kayaking or canoeing. This beautiful space invites you to unwind and reconnect with nature.

I unfortunately did not have time to visit Lago Luchetti but it’s at the top of my list for a return trip.

7. Salto Santa Clara Waterfall

Salto Santa Clara Waterfall is a captivating attraction tucked away in the lush landscapes of Yauco. The hike to the waterfall takes approximately 30 minutes from the parking lot.

The trail is moderately challenging, weaving through beautiful natural scenery.

It’s important to note that cell service is minimal in the area, so downloading an offline map beforehand is recommended.

The waterfall’s location in the lush greenery of Puerto Rico’s mountains makes it a beautiful journey.

8. Drink Coffee

Yauco’s mountainous terrain and natural rivers provide Yauco with the perfect coffee-growing conditions.

Visitors to Yauco can immerse themselves in the local coffee culture by visiting a coffee shop or taking a coffee farm tour.
