Are you planning to spend 1 day in Istanbul? This jam-packed itinerary scratches the surface of some of the top things to do in Istanbul if you only have one day.
I spent four days in Istanbul last summer and have compiled a list of some of the best things to see in Istanbul in one day. These things take into account time spent enjoying each place and not rushing around so much that you are not enjoying the experience!
Designed for efficiency, this route ensures you see the best of Istanbul’s iconic landmarks while also uncovering hidden gems along the way.
Some of the best things to do during 1 day in Istanbul include the vibrant markets of the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, Sultanahmet Square, Galata Tower, Karaköy, and a relaxing Bosphorus sunset cruise.
1 Day in Istanbul Itinerary
Morning: Sultanahmet Square
1. Blue Mosque

Begin your day early by visiting the iconic Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque). Known for its stunning blue tiles, the mosque is an architectural masterpiece and a must-see.
Arrive early to avoid crowds and enjoy the tranquility.
2. Hagia Sophia
Walk 5 minutes to the Hagia Sophia, a historic marvel that was once a church, then a mosque, and now a museum.
Its grand architecture and intricate mosaics offer a glimpse into Istanbul’s rich past. Spend time admiring the beauty of the interior.
3. Basilica Cistern
Just a 5-minute walk from the Hagia Sophia is the Basilica Cistern. Explore the underground world of Byzantine water storage, with its atmospheric lighting and the famous Medusa heads.
The quiet, cool ambiance offers a refreshing escape.
4. Arasta Bazaar

Arasta Bazaar is a smaller, more local market conveniently located around the corner from Sultanahmet Square. There are not as many tourists here, and it provides a more low-key market experience.

Afternoon: Markets
5. Grand Bazaar

From Sultanahmet Square, it is a 12-minute walk or ride on the T1 Tram to the Grand Bazaar. This massive market is one of the most famous things to do in Istanbul.
With over 3,000 shops, you can shop for everything from jewelry and carpets to spices and textiles.
Wander through the narrow streets, shop for souvenirs, and experience the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s oldest covered markets.
6. Spice Market

A 10-minute walk from the Grand Bazaar takes you to the Spice Bazaar.
This vibrant market is filled with colorful spices, teas, dried fruits, and Turkish delights.
Don’t forget to try a handful of pistachio baklava or sample Turkish coffee from one of the local stalls.

Evening: Karaköy, Galata, and Bosphorus
7. Galata Tower

Take a 20-minute walk or 15-minute train ride to the Galata Tower. For the best panoramic views of Istanbul, head to the observation deck.
If you choose to climb to the top, the tower offers a breathtaking view of the Golden Horn, Bosphorus, and historic Istanbul.
The area around Galata is lively, with cozy cafés and local shops. I chose to save money on climbing the tower steps on my trip and just explored the surrounding area.
There are tons of great photo opportunities featuring Galata towering in the background!
8. Early Dinner in Karaköy

Located near the waterfront, Karaköy has a lively atmosphere with plenty of trendy cafes, restaurants, and eateries offering fresh seafood, Turkish meze, and international dishes.
It’s a hub for both locals and tourists, so you can enjoy authentic flavors while soaking in the energetic vibe.
The area is also full of narrow, cobbled streets lined with art galleries, boutique shops, and colorful street art. You’ll find an interesting mix of old Ottoman buildings and modern architecture, creating a dynamic atmosphere.
