I recently took a trip to Croatia, and Omiš blew me out of the water (figuratively- I can’t swim!).
Slightly away from the main tourist path in Split, Omiš offers travelers a more secluded experience alongside spectacular scenery.
This small coastal town offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and adventure, all without the crowds found in larger cities like Split.

1. Quieter Coastal Escape
Omiš offers a peaceful alternative to busier Croatian cities like Split.
Nestled where the Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea, it provides stunning natural beauty without the crowds.
This also means tons of adventure activities, ranging from ziplining to white water rafting!
Its small-town charm makes it ideal for travelers seeking relaxation alongside authentic local life.

2. Island Hopping from Omiš to Brač
Omiš is located just under one hour by boat from the rugged island of Brač.
Brač was high on my Croatia list, and I thought I wouldn’t have time to visit, but its proximity to Omiš made it easy!
Daily boat tours run between Omiš and Brač Island, giving visitors easy access to pristine beaches and charming towns.
Tours usually provide 1.5 hours of exploring two different towns, a beautiful swimming stop in the Adriatic Sea, and lunch and drinks!
I think this is amazing value for the money.
Stops often include Pučišća, famous for its white limestone and traditional stonemasonry.
3. Beach Days
Omiš boasts several beaches to suit different tastes.
Velika Plaza is the largest and most popular, with lounge chair rentals and a lively atmosphere.
It can be a bit more crowded, but the views are amazing!
For a quieter spot, Slavinj Brzet offers rocky shores perfect for those who prefer less crowded spaces and natural shade.
It’s located past the marina on the outskirts of central Omiš.
4. Cetina River Canyon Adventure
The dramatic canyon carved by the Cetina River is a playground for adventure lovers.
White-water rafting, ziplining across the canyon, and hiking trails are popular activities here.
I joined a rafting tour with Rafting Pirate Omis, and it was spectacular!
The tour was a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making it ideal for beginners.
There was even a cliff-jumping opportunity and a couple of swim stops- one of them was through a cave!
The guides also take photos throughout the trip you have the opportunity to purchase them at the end for 15 Euros.
The zipline course spans over 6,500 feet and reaches heights of nearly 500 feet, providing breathtaking views and a thrilling experience.

5. Local Flavor
Omiš’s culinary scene highlights traditional Dalmatian dishes served in cozy, atmospheric spots.
My favorite is Arsana restaurant! I could truly feel the passion the servers and chefs have for the local cuisine of their hometown, Omiš.
Wine lovers can enjoy tastings either locally or on day trips to vineyards in the nearby Imotski region.
Small shops also offer local wines and rakija, giving visitors a taste of regional traditions.
I recommend visiting Mimica Gastro Shop! Petra, her brother, and father produce local wine on a vineyard in the Imotski region.
Petra and her brother provide free tastings at the shop. Petra’s passion for her family culture truly shines.
You can buy the family’s wine or other local farm products like cheese, jam, and honey at the shop.
6. Fortresses
Visiting a fortress is one of the best things to do in Omiš!
The town’s history is visible in its two main fortresses: Peovica and Starigrad.
Peovica is an easier climb with panoramic views of the old town and the sea.
You can access it by a couple of short, steep stairways. It takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the top. Entrance costs 5 Euros (cash only).
Starigrad towers at 860 feet above sea level. Getting there is a more challenging mountain hike that takes about 1.5 hours both ways.
You are rewarded at the top with sweeping vistas of the Adriatic Sea and the Cetina River.
Both fortresses are rich in history, having protected Omiš from past invaders.

7. Old Town
Wandering through Omiš’s old town reveals a quaint experience!
Cobbled streets and medieval walls create a vibrant atmosphere.
Surrounded by local shops, restaurants, and cafes, the Old Town is a charming way to spend an afternoon or top off a day in Omiš.
Its location between towering canyon walls and the sea creates a unique setting that blends history and nature seamlessly.
