I had the opportunity to visit last summer, and it was one of my favorite places I visited in Montenegro.
It is known for its calm waterfront and historic charm. The town is less crowded than nearby Kotor, making it perfect for a relaxed visit. I actually prefer visiting Perast because it’s not as crowded and it feels more relaxing.

Visitors can also take short boat rides to nearby islands or enjoy views of the sparkling bay.

1. Walk the Perast Waterfront
In just 10 minutes, you can walk the entire Perast Waterfront!
The Waterfront is a charming stretch that’s perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Along the way, you’ll see small fishing boats bobbing in the water, pastel-colored buildings, and cafés spilling onto the promenade.
There are benches where you can pause to watch the bay, and small piers where locals and visitors alike dip their feet in the calm water.
The walk also offers views of the surrounding mountains and nearby islands, including Our Lady of the Rocks.
2. Churches
Perast is dotted with historic churches that showcase the town’s rich past.
Baroque facades, intricate woodwork, and centuries-old frescoes can be found inside and outside the buildings.
Many are located along narrow streets or near the waterfront, making it easy to admire as you stroll.
Walking between the churches also gives you a sense of the town’s layered architecture and quiet charm.
3. Swim
While there’s no formal beach in Perast (just like in Kotor), you can enter the water along the waterfront or at small piers.
Bring water shoes if you prefer rocky entry points, and enjoy the calm, clear waters of the bay.

4. Waterfront Restaurant
A leisurely lunch or coffee break at a waterfront café is a perfect way to soak in the town’s relaxed vibe!
Dining at a waterfront restaurant in Perast was my favorite thing I did in the town.
I know, it sounds so simple, but it’s such a relaxing way to enjoy the water and just chill out!
I had planted myself at Armonia for hours and didn’t even notice the time passing. I ordered a Cola, sipped coffee, and enjoyed a vegetarian dinner followed by a traditional Perast dessert.
The entire meal, including two drinks, cost only about €20. I was so shocked because, as you know, you’re usually paying for location at any waterfront restaurant!
Armonia has such fair prices. Maybe this is typical of Perast, but I’m not really sure because this is the only restaurant I dined at in town.

5. Peraska Torta
Peraska Torta is a traditional dessert unique to Perast, with a history that stretches back centuries.
And it’s absolutely delicious!
This layered cake combines thin pastry sheets with rich cream and finely chopped nuts, creating a delicate balance of textures and flavors.
It was originally made for special occasions and festivals, which is why it remains a celebrated local treat today.
Tasting Peraska Torta at a waterfront café or bakery gives you a sweet connection to the town’s culinary heritage and is a perfect way to end a leisurely meal by the water.

The Blue Cave is a small cave along the coast near Perast, famous for its bright turquoise water when sunlight hits the entrance.
It’s one of the most popular things to do in Kotor, so it’s easy to visit from either town on the bay.
A short boat ride takes you there from the town’s waterfront.
Visitors often stop for a quick swim or to snap photos of the glowing water.
The cave is tucked away from crowds, making it a peaceful and memorable stop.
It’s also a great way to see the coastline from a new perspective while enjoying the calm waters of the bay.
7. Perast Museum
The Perast Museum showcases the town’s maritime and cultural heritage.
Exhibits include old maps, model ships, religious artifacts, and traditional tools used by local sailors.
The museum is small but packed with details that highlight Perast’s role on the Bay of Kotor over the centuries.
A visit takes less than an hour, making it easy to include while exploring the waterfront or nearby churches.
It’s a quiet spot to learn more about the town beyond its scenic views.
8. Our Lady of The Rocks Island
One of Perast’s highlights is the small man-made island, Our Lady of the Rocks.
Accessible by a short boat ride, the island features a historic church and museum.
Inside, you’ll find centuries-old art and artifacts that tell the story of the bay.
The view from the island across the water and surrounding mountains is spectacular!
9. Other Towns
Like any other town on the Bay of Kotor, I recommend that you take an afternoon trip to another town.
The towns are quite close to one another, so you might as well take advantage of this and experience somewhere different.
Risan is located only 4 minutes by car from Peras, and Kotor is about 25 minutes by car.

Perast is a quieter alternative to the busy streets of Kotor. It provides a lovely vacation escape on any Montenegro itinerary.
Its very small size makes it ideal to combine your vacation with other towns on the coast.
I totally recommend visiting Perast on a vacation to the Bay of Kotor!
