Looking for a Montenegro itinerary? You’re in the right place!
I visited Montenegro over the summer, and it truly surprised me… in the best way possible!
I hadn’t heard much about Montenegro before my visit, and I’m so happy I took the leap. Montenegro is absolutely gorgeous.
Picture the most beautiful mountains surrounded by teal water. Want a national park hiking adventure? Montenegro’s got that. Take a waterfront cruise? Done.
This small country packs in a lot—medieval towns, glacial lakes, and dramatic mountain scenery.
Ready to experience it all? I have created this 5-day Montenegro itinerary just for you!
This guide covers the top spots like Kotor, Perast, Lake Skadar, and Durmitor National Park.
Let’s begin planning your Montenegro trip!
5-Day Montenegro Itinerary
Day 1: Bay of Kotor
1. Kotor Old Town

Begin your first day in Kotor by strolling through the Old Town.
The medieval, cobblestone town surrounded by a mote made me feel like I had stepped back in time!
It’s incredibly charming in its own right. Just add in the gorgeous mountains and blue waters you are surrounded by!
Seriously, it’s amazing.
And, amazingly crowded. I highly recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid cruise ship crowds.
If you struggle with crowds like I do, this could make or break your experience.
2. Kotor Market

The Kotor Market is my favorite thing I did in Kotor. Getting a taste of local life is exactly what I look for when I travel.
Just outside the Old Town walls, the market is a lively spot where locals gather each morning.
You’ll find colorful stalls filled with fresh fruit, vegetables, cheeses, olives, and other homemade products.
It’s a great place to experience everyday Montenegrin life and sample authentic flavors.
Stop by early for the best selection and bring cash, as many vendors don’t accept cards.

3. Kotor Food Tour
A food tour in Kotor is a flavorful way to connect with Montenegro’s culture.
As you wander the winding streets of the Old Town, a local guide leads you to hidden cafés, markets, and family-run eateries.
Along the way, you’ll taste fresh seafood, savory cured meats, local cheeses, and traditional pastries.
4. St. John’s Fortress
St. John’s Fortress rises steeply above the old town, offering breathtaking views of Kotor Bay.
The climb is over 1,000 steps and now requires a €15 fee. I skipped this on my trip due to limited time and hot weather, but my friends said it was worth it.
Bring water and start early before the heat sets in!
5. Blue Cave Tour
The Blue Cave Tour is one of Kotor’s most highly rated experiences.
It’s one of the best things to do in Kotor!
Cruising along the Bay of Kotor, you’ll glide past charming seaside villages before arriving at the cave’s glowing entrance.
As sunlight filters through the water, the interior transforms into a shimmering blue wonderland.
Many tours also stop at nearby hidden coves, offering a chance to swim in crystal-clear waters.
🚍Transportation Tip:
Kotor is easily reached by bus or car from Tivat or Podgorica airports.
Once in town, you won’t need a car — everything is walkable.
Day 2: Perast and Herceg Novi
1. Perast Waterfront

Begin your second morning in Montenegro in Perast!
The charming village is located only 15 minutes by car from Kotor.
It’s quieter and more relaxed, with no cruise port and fewer crowds.
You can walk the entire length of Perast’s waterfront in under 10 minutes, but don’t rush — this town is meant to be savored.

2. Waterfront Lunch

A highlight of Perast is enjoying a meal right on the water.
Dining at a waterfront restaurant allows you to savor fresh seafood and local specialties while watching boats drift by.
Whether you choose a simple café or a more upscale spot, the combination of good food and a stunning setting is unbeatable.
3. Our Lady Of The Rocks Island
One of Perast’s most famous attractions is Our Lady of the Rocks, a small man-made island with a church and museum.
Accessible by a short boat ride, it’s a place full of history and legend. Inside the church, centuries-old art and artifacts tell stories of the bay’s past.
The view of Perast and the surrounding coast from the island is unforgettable!
4. Herceg Novi or Budva
If you want to see more of the coast, you can continue to Herceg Novi (north) or Budva (south).
Herceg Novi offers beautiful sea views and a laid-back, local vibe, while Budva is livelier, with sandy beaches and a vibrant nightlife scene.
Choose based on your travel style — both make great afternoon or evening stops before returning toward Kotor.
🚍Transportation Tip:
Local buses run between Kotor, Perast, Budva, and Herceg Novi.
However, renting a car gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to stop in small towns along the bay.

Day 3: Lake Skadar
1. Lake Skadar
Begin your drive north from the coast to Lake Skadar.
Lake Skadar is one of Montenegro’s quiet treasures.
It’s huge, peaceful, and surrounded by gentle hills, with little islands scattered across its glassy surface.
You can take a slow boat ride to hidden coves, spot birds in the reeds, or visit centuries-old monasteries tucked along the shore.
The drive takes about 1.5 hours from Budva or Kotor and offers beautiful scenery along the way.
⭐You can alternatively take a day tour from Kotor to Lake Skadar⭐
3. Optional: Podgorica Stop
From Lake Skadar, you can take a short detour to Podgorica to explore the capital’s quieter side.
Podgorica is often overlooked, but it can be a surprisingly rewarding detour.
Montenegro’s capital blends a laid-back pace with an authentic local vibe that feels very different from the tourist spots on the coast.
The city is filled with charming cafés, modern art galleries, and quiet squares perfect for an afternoon stroll.
Podgorica is also a good spot to enjoy an affordable local meal before continuing your journey north.
4. Drive to Žabljak

Continue your journey to Žabljak, the town that welcomes you to Durmitor National Park.
The stunning drive takes about 2.5–3 hours, with winding mountain roads and dramatic landscapes.
Arrive in time to enjoy an evening stroll around Black Lake or a relaxed dinner in town.

Day 4: Durmitor National Park
1. Black Lake

Start your morning with a walk around Crno Jezero (Black Lake), one of the park’s most visited spots.
The circular trail takes about an hour and is easy to follow, with incredible reflections of the pine forests and peaks on the water.
You can hike the Black Lake on your own or join a hiking group tour.
Tip: There is a national park restaurant here. The rustic interior is so cozy! It made for a warm stop when I got caught in the rain.
2. Durmitor Ring Drive

The Durmitor Ring is one of the most beautiful things to do in Montenegro.
Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful drives I have taken in the world.
The 146-kilometer loop circles through Durmitor National Park. You will drive on a narrow mountain road past glacial lakes, quiet villages, and lots of sheep.
There are plenty of photo stops on the route!
I truly cannot wait to visit the Durmitor Ring Drive again one day.
3. Tara River Canyon Rafting OR Ziplining

End the day with white-water rafting on the Tara River, known for its clear water and dramatic canyon views.
The rapids are exciting but manageable, making it fun for beginners and experienced rafters alike.
Most half-day trips include all the gear, a guide, and lunch by the river.
If you’d rather stay dry, try ziplining over the canyon for an equally unforgettable experience.

Day 5: Durmitor National Park
1. Bobotov Kuk
Hike to the highest peak in Montenegro- Bobotov Kuk.
This hike was a bucket list item for me, but I solo-traveled in Montenegro and did not feel safe completing this intense hike alone.
Hiking tour groups are offered, but this was out of budget for me.
You can take an easier route to the top on a Via Ferrata tour. This was on my list, but I held back because I was on a tight budget. Next time!
Tip: If hiking isn’t really your thing, skip the Bobotov Kuk hike. This trek is extremely aggressive.
Alternatively, spend this time grabbing a cup of coffee from one of the two shops located on the Ring Drive or learning about other tour options in Žabljak.
2. Ski Lift
For a round-trip ticket to the top of Savin Kuk Mountain, head to the ski resort!
A round-trip ticket costs approximately 10 Euros per person.
