Looking for a 3-day Montenegro itinerary? This is the guide for you!
I visited Montenegro over the summer and had an amazing experience.
Montenegro is a small country on the Adriatic coast in southeastern Europe.
It’s known for dramatic mountains, turquoise waters, and historic towns.
Travelers visit to explore medieval streets, hike rugged peaks, and cruise serene lakes.
The Bay of Kotor offers charming villages and sparkling waters.
Inland, glacial lakes and pine-covered mountains provide peaceful escapes.
In three days, you can see the country’s highlights without rushing.
Let’s start planning your Montenegro trip!
3-Day Montenegro Itinerary
Day 1: Bay of Kotor
1. Kotor Market

Start your first morning in Montenegro at the Kotor Market! Arrive around 8:00AM to see it at its liveliest and catch the freshest produce.
Walk among stalls selling fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and local treats.
Most vendors do not take credit card- bring cash!
🚶Transportation Tip: The market is within walking distance of Kotor Old Town. If you are staying in Kotor, no car or bus is needed.
2. Kotor Old Town

After enjoying a culinary experience at the Kotor Market, spend 2 hours exploring the Old Town.
Visit historic squares, medieval churches, and hidden cafés.
Early morning or late afternoon is best to avoid cruise ship crowds.
Seriously- the crowds are no joke. If you’re like me, this can make or break the experience.

3. Kotor Food Tour (Optional)
Book a 2–3 hour food tour for mid-morning or lunch.
Tours generally include stops at family-run eateries, local bakeries, and small markets.
This is a great way to combine sightseeing with tasting authentic Montenegrin flavors!

Consider signing up for a Montenegrin Cooking Class
4. Blue Cave Tour
One of the most popular things to do in Kotor is take a Blue Cave Tour.
In the afternoon (around 2:00–5:00 PM), take a boat tour to the Blue Cave and nearby coves. Bring swimwear if you want to jump in at quiet spots.
Many tours also stop in the neighboring town of Perast– one of my favorite small towns on the bay!
🚶Transportation Tip: Boat tours depart from Kotor harbor. No car is needed if staying in town.

Day 2: Durmitor
1. Drive to Žabljak
Leave the coast early (around 7:00 AM) and drive to Žabljak.
I recommend leaving as early as possible to avoid traffic. The journey takes roughly 3 hours.
🚘Transportation Tip: Renting a car is the most practical option. If you do not want to rent a car, sign up for a Durmitor Day Trip from Kotor for this portion of the trip.
2. Black Lake

Arrive late morning and spend 1–2 hours walking the circular trail around Black Lake.
Bring comfortable shoes and water. This is a peaceful spot to relax before tackling more of the park.
You can alternatively sign up for a Black Lake hiking tour. The hike itself is pretty gentle, and something I would do on my own.
3. Durmitor Ring Drive

Start the loop in the early afternoon.
The Durmitor Ring takes about 2-3 hours, including photo stops, short walks, and coffee shops. The coffee shops were my favorite part!
Highlights include small glacial lakes, viewpoints over valleys, and traditional mountain settlements.
🚘Transportation Tip: A car is essential for this loop.
The road is narrow but well-maintained; drive carefully in winter or rainy conditions.

Day 3: Durmitor
1. Bobotov Kuk
Begin the day early (around 7:00–8:00 AM) to hike Bobotov Kuk.
The full trail can take 6–7 hours, but shorter hikes around the base offer excellent views if you’re pressed for time.
You can complete the hike on your own or join a guided tour.
I recommend completing this hike in some sort of group and not on your own, because it is very intense.
🎒Packing Tip: Bring a packed lunch, water, and layered clothing, as the weather can change quickly.
2. Ski Lift
If hiking isn’t preferred, take the ski lift to the top of Savin Kuk for 1–2 hours.
This offers easy access to panoramic views and a chance to enjoy coffee or snacks at the summit.
3. Tara River Canyon Rafting or Ziplining

Finish the day with an adrenaline activity in the afternoon (around 2:00–5:00 PM).
Half-day rafting trips provide all gear, a guide, and lunch.
Ziplining gives a shorter, but equally exciting, view of the canyon.
