Looking for how to get from Antigua, Guatemala to Lake Atitlan? We cover the top options for the route in this guide.
Lake Atitlan is one of the most beautiful destinations in Guatemala, and in my opinion, in the world. It is located anywhere between 3 – 7 hours from Antigua or Guatemala City, depending on what type of transportation you use and what time of day you take your trip.
I visited Lake Atitlan from Antigua in 2024 by taking the public shuttle, but there are many options such as private transport for a more comfortable, quick ride.
Let’s dive into this comprehensive guide of the top transportation options from Antigua, Guatemala to Lake Atitlan!
Transport Options
Public Shuttle
Taking a public shuttle is one of the most popular ways to get from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. Tons of tour agencies offer this route like GuateGo and Guate Driver.
Be mindful that public shuttle times can vary. Mine was approximately 45 minutes late. I recommend plan accordingly by not booking any time-sensitive tours or activities on the same day.
Public Shuttle Companies:
- GuateGo
- Guate Driver
Private Shuttle
I booked a private shuttle from Lake Atitlan back to Guatemala City. I wanted to maximize my morning finishing the best things to do in Panajachel, and knew that the public shuttle times were limited.
I didn’t want to be in a time crunch, and didn’t want to risk getting motion sick again right before my flight!
Private Shuttle Companies:
- GuateGo
- Guate Driver
I also highly recommend taking a private shuttle if you are traveling with friends. Private shuttle prices back to Guatemala City were approximately $50 for me.
I booked a private shuttle for $150 and split it with two other travelers. Between the three of us, we spent the exact same cost ($50 / person) on a private shuttle than we would have on the public shuttle.
Car Rental
The most car rental agencies are located at La Aurora Airport in Guatemala City.
I personally did not feel comfortable recommending a car in Guatemala. There are lots of narrow, cobblestone roads in Antigua, and this just isn’t my driving jam.
But maybe this works for you! I recommend doing your own research about driving in the country and making your own decision from there.
Uber or Taxi
I wouldn’t recommend this option, but I hear of other travelers who have completed the journey this way.
I think it’s too risky because you don’t know the true cost you are paying. I also feel much more comfortable traveling this far of a distance with a licensed operator.
Book a day trip
Finally, if you are extremely tight on time, there are day trip operators organizing an entire tour from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. These tours begin very early in the morning.
Personally, I do not recommend this option because I don’t like feeling like I am rushing or spending more time in transport than I actually am at my destination.
And I just absolutely love Lake Atitlan (specifically San Marcos and San Juan) therefore I would maximize spending time here. But that’s just me!
And this day tour option exists for a reason, so maybe that’s what is best for you.
