1. Downtown Chania

Downtown Chania is one of my favorite parts of Crete! Its Venetian Harbor is surrounded by colorful architecture, turquoise water, and the White Mountains in the distance.
I recommend experiencing it in the morning or on a weekday late afternoon when more of the intense crowds are dwindling.
My favorite viewpoint over downtown Chania is at Pandora Suites Hotel.

2. Pink Sand Beaches

Crete is famous for its pink sand beaches like Elafonisi or Falasarna. It’s important to note that not all of the sand is pink, and you’re more likely to catch glimpses directly along the shoreline.

3. Gorges

Crete is famous for its towering gorges, especially Samaria Gorge.
Tons of tour operators offer day trips to Samaria Gorge or Imbros Gorge, or you can rent a car or use public transportation to get to either of these gorges on your own.
We experienced an overview of the Talos Gorge on our combination day tour to Elafonisi, Falasarna, and the Oldest Olive Tree in the world with Sea by Bus Tours.

Visiting local vineyards like Manousakis Winery near Chania is a great way to experience the local wine culture of Crete.
Located about 30 minutes from the city, you can reach the winery by car or taxi.
Manousakis Winery is known for its beautiful setting in the hills, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the sea.
The winery’s history is tied to the region’s rich tradition of winemaking, which dates back thousands of years. Crete’s unique climate and soil create perfect conditions for growing a variety of local grape varieties, making the region a hidden gem for wine lovers.
Visitors can enjoy tours of the vineyard, learn about the winemaking process, sample delicious wines, and enjoy lunch.
5. Rethymno

Rethymnon is another gorgeous, water-side town, quite similar to Old Town Chania.
Rethymno offers a charming blend of Venetian architecture, narrow streets, and beautiful beaches.
Highlights include strolling through the Old Town, with its cobblestone alleys, Venetian harbor, and historic Fortezza Castle.
The city is also known for its lively atmosphere, great shops, and delicious local food. Rethymno’s beaches, like the long sandy stretch of Koumbes Beach, are perfect for relaxing.

Knossos Palace is an ancient palace in Crete that was built by the Minoans around 1,400 BC. It’s the largest Minoan palace ever discovered and was once the center of their civilization.
The palace is famous because of its amazing architecture, colorful frescoes, and advanced plumbing system.
It is also linked to the myth of the Minotaur and King Minos, which makes it an exciting spot for those interested in history and legends.
People come to Crete from all over the world to visit Knossos because it gives a fascinating look into ancient life on the island.
Tickets usually cost about €15 for adults, with discounts for students and kids, and you can buy them at the entrance or online to skip long lines. You don’t need a guide.
Knossos is just a short drive or bus ride from Heraklion, making it easy to visit.

Agios Nikolaos is a charming coastal town known for its picturesque harbor, vibrant atmosphere, and stunning views of the Mirabello Bay.
It’s an excellent destination for a relaxing day, with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and shops lining the waterfront.
