Guatemala is one of my new favorite countries to explore, and Antigua is the main tourist starting point. It was one of my favorite trips in 2024.
It is an absolutely beautiful town, but there is much to see beyond the cobblestone paths and incredible architecture (no matter how beautiful it is!)
The most popular thing to do in the area (and a main reason visitors travel to Guatemala) is to hike a volcano. We will also cover the whimsical world of Hobbitenango, an eco-park inspired by the Hobbit homes from the famous Tolkien tales, offering a unique blend of nature and imagination.
And for those seeking a bit more adrenaline, join an ATV Mountain Tour where you’ll rip through rugged landscapes, villages, and coffee plantations, all while taking in the breathtaking scenery surrounding Antigua.

Best Day Trips from Antigua
Pacaya Volcano
Hiking Pacaya Volcano is one of the most popular day trips (or really, half-day trips) from Antigua. Tour vans pick up passengers at their choice of two times: 5:00am or 2:00pm.
This is known as the “easier”, or more lowkey hiking option of volcanoes in the area. The most popular volcano hike is Acatenango, but it is two days.
It is required to hike Pacaya Volcano with a guide. I recommend booking a guided tour where you get picked up at your accommodation.
I booked a same-day tour on arrival at the hostel Maison Bougainvillea and they coordinated it quickly for $15. Most hostels in Antigua can arrange the tour for you.
Hiking Pacaya Volcano is certainly a unique experience. You can:

Hobbitenango
Hobbitenango is a small, hobbit town located 25 minutes by open-air jeep (or car) from Antigua.
Hobbitenango is a top tourist spot for locals and those traveling from abroad. Visitors love the hobbit formations such as domed doorways adorned with vibrant flowers as well as outdoor games like archery, and of course incredible views.
Getting there:
Jeep Ride: This is the most popular and cost-efficient option. Purchase your tickets at least two hours before the jeep at the Hobbitenango Office in Antigua.
Check the website to confirm most up-to-date times.
Private Transportation: You can alternatively higher an Uber or Taxi, but this would be far more expensive.
ATV Mountain Tour
The ATV Tour is one of the most popular in the area, and takes you to some notable stops on this list (such as Hobbitenango) making it a great two-in-one combination for those who are looking for something like this.
Many ATV tours begin at the picturesque village of San Juan del Obispo. You might explore the cobblestone streets, visit the historic church, and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside.
Some ATV tours even conclude with a relaxing soak in natural hot springs, where you can unwind and rejuvenate tired muscles after a day of adventure.
Chichicastenango
Chichicastenango is located approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Antigua Guatemala. The journey typically takes around 2 to 3 hours each way, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Several day trip operators complete this tour regularly, with pick-up from your accommodation in Antigua.
Chichicastenango’s famous market takes place on Thursdays and Sundays. If possible, plan your visit on one of these days to experience the bustling atmosphere and wide array of goods for sale, including textiles, pottery, handicrafts, fruits, vegetables, and more.
Another highlight of Chichicastenango is the 400-year-old Santo Tomás Church, located in the town’s central plaza. The church blends Catholicism with indigenous Mayan spirituality.

Lake Atitlan
Lake Atitlan was one of my absolute favorite places on my entire Guatemala itinerary! And I can’t WAIT to go back!
While you can technically do it as a day trip, I recommend spending more time here. This allows you to relax and travel by lancha, or water taxi, so other villages along the lake such as San Marcos or San Juan.
However, if a day is what you have, several providers do take day tours that bring you around to some of the best things to do in Panajachel. (Panajachel is the first of thirteen towns along the river).
Jocotenango
Jocotenango is a charming town located just a short distance from Antigua Guatemala, making it an ideal destination for a day trip.
Once in Jocotenango, you can wander through the town’s cobblestone streets, visit the central plaza (Parque Central), and explore local markets, shops, and eateries.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the historic church of San Felipe de Jesús, which dates back to the 16th century and features beautiful colonial architecture.
You can get to Jocotenango on your own or by booking a day tour.

- Public bus: Take a local bus from Antigua’s main bus terminal to Jocotenango. The journey typically takes around 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Taxi or rideshare: You can also hire a taxi or use a ridesharing service like Uber to reach Jocotenango from Antigua. The ride should take around 10 to 15 minutes.
Iximche Ruins
Visiting the Iximche Ruins as a day trip from Antigua Guatemala offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Mayan civilization and its rich cultural heritage.
Iximche Ruins are located approximately 56 miles northwest of Antigua Guatemala, near the town of Tecpán.
Explore the well-preserved ruins, including ceremonial plazas, temples, ball courts, and residential structures.
Admire the impressive stelae (stone monuments) and altars adorned with intricate carvings and glyphs, which provide insights into Mayan history and culture.
Getting there:
- Public bus: Take a bus from Antigua’s main bus terminal to Tecpán. From there, you can hire a taxi or tuk-tuk to reach the ruins. The journey by bus may take around 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
- Guided tour: Many tour operators in Antigua offer guided day tours to the Iximche Ruins. These tours typically include transportation, a knowledgeable guide, and visits to other attractions in the area.
- Private transportation: If you prefer a more flexible itinerary, you can hire a private driver or arrange for a taxi to take you to the ruins and back to Antigua.
Guatemala City
Guatemala City is not the first place you think of as a day tour from Antigua, because it is the location of the country’s international airport, therefore all visitors need to make their way through Guatemala City before getting to Antigua anyways!
However, if you are spending a long time in Antigua and are looking to separate your time, taking a guided day tour from Antigua to Guatemala City might be the option for you.
There is lots to do in Guatemala City. Consider visiting the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Textiles and Clothing (Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena) to admire a diverse collection of traditional Mayan textiles and contemporary art.
