Looking for the best Fall foliage in the Midwest?  Imagine witnessing the Midwest transform into a vibrant palette of reds, oranges, and yellows!

There are plenty of colorful, vibrant locations all around the Midwest United States.  From classic spots to hidden gems, there are tons of places to experience the beauty of fall in what many consider, an underexplored, region.

Consider the unexpected beauty of Chicago’s parks and boulevards, where urban landscapes meet nature’s autumnal display.

Not far from the city, Starved Rock State Park offers a stunning contrast of colors with its towering canyons and waterfalls amidst the changing leaves.

Further north, Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin presents an astonishing backdrop of deep blue waters against fiery forest hues, a photographer’s and nature lover’s paradise.

Illinois

1. Chicago

Chicago is my favorite under-the-radar spot for finding foliage.  When you think of a huge city, nature is not the first thing that comes to mind.

But there are plenty of green spaces in the city that complement Chicago’s urban flair with a hint of “fall”.

Best Fall Foliage Spots in Chicago:

  • Lincoln Park
  • University of Chicago (Rainbow Ivy)
  • Jackson Park

One of my favorite times to visit Starved Rock is in the fall.

Spring gives you the highest chance for waterfalls, but the color explosion around the canyons, valleys, and Mississippi River surrounding Starved Rock gives way to a whole new experience.
