Is Chania worth visiting? Chania is one of the most beautiful cities in Crete (in my humble opinion!) It features colorful buildings over a turquoise seaside painted with a mountainous backdrop.
There are fortresses, small shops, nearby beaches, and tons of culture. Chania also houses one of the island’s two international airports, making it the most convenient town to explore on the west side of the island.
During my recent 10-day trip to Crete, we spent 5 days based out of Chania. Here are some of my top reasons to visit Chania in 2024!
7 Reasons to Visit Chania
1. Colorful Buildings
Old Town Chania’s colorful buildings over the Venetian Harbor are one of my favorite reasons to visit Chania.
They painted a beautiful backsplash to the scenery of Greece from all around the Venetian Harbor, the lighthouse, and the fortress.
My favorite place to enjoy the overall views was from our hotel rooftop at Pandora Suites.
(Honestly, the prime rooftop location made Pandora Suites one of my favorite parts of our Crete trip).
2. Old Venetian Harbor
The Old Venetian Harbor in Old Town Chania is a bustling center for locals and tourists alike.
Established by the Venetians in the late 13th century when they ruled Crete, the harbor features a blend of Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture.
Some of the best things to do in the Old Venetian Harbor include visiting the iconic Venetian Lighthouse, admiring architecture, enjoying views of the Mediterranean Sea, and simply exploring.
3. Charming Streets
One of the most quaint parts of Downtown Chania is the charming streets. I could have wandered for hours, exploring the winding, cobblestone roads.
There are tons of small shops in Downtown Chania along with tavernas, gelato shops, and more.
Colorful streets are flooded with bright flowers and local businesses.
Tip: I recommend visiting earlier in the morning for the best photos before things become too crowded. In the evening, Crete comes alive with tons of nightlife options.
4. Prime Day Trip Location
Chania is located in a prime part of Crete. It features one of the island’s international airports, and you can take tons of day trips from Chania.
Basing yourself out of Chania during a Crete trip is easy. Tourists enjoy popular gorge hikes like Samaria Gorge or Imbros Gorge. Beach lovers have their choice of sandy getaways, and urban travelers will enjoy neighboring cities like Rethymno.
Some of the best day trips from Chania include:
- Rethymno
- Elafonisi Beach

5. Beaches
In addition to its drivable location from famous beaches like Elafonisi, Falasarna, and Zorbas, you can also hang out at the beach right outside of Old Town Chania!
A 20-minute walk from the city center along the path following the water brings you to Nea Chora Beach.

6. Ferry Port
Chania’s Ferry Port makes it an accessible stop from a cruise ship. If you are planning a Greek Islands cruise, there is a good chance you are going to get to explore Old Town Chania.
The port also makes Chania an accessible leaping-off point for day trips like island hopping to Santorini.
Note: I’m not a cruise person, so I cannot speak to using the ferry port personally!
7. Tavernas
You can experience some of the best food and culture at one of Chania’s amazing tavernas!
A taverna is a local, family-owned Greek restaurant. These local establishments are the perfect way to support small businesses and immerse yourself in a traditional experience (while enjoying amazing food).
Most tavernas provide a small, complimentary dessert and raki at the end of your meal. Raki is a traditional, grape-based spirit drink.
Some highly rated taverna restaurants include:
- Miko Kelari
- Perperas

Conclusion
Crete is absolutely worth visiting, and so is the beautiful town of Chania! One of its two international airports, Chania Airport, is conveniently located here making it easy to visit. Visit Chania for the beaches, but stay for the incredible food, beautiful views, and charming streets.
Chania is an incredible vacation getaway. If you make it to Crete, I would love to hear about your trip!
