Solo Travel Washington DC: 9 Top Tips

in ,

Looking for the top Washington DC solo travel tips?  This is the guide for you!

Washington DC is an amazing city to explore on your own.  Connect with your inner history buff at the iconic monuments, explore the colonial neighborhoods, and take a beautiful day trip around the neighboring mountains.

I have visited DC at least 5 times and find something new every time I visit!

My top tips for solo travel in Washington DC include: not renting a car, using public transportation, packing light, meeting new friends on a walking tour, saving money at free museums monuments, and parks, getting off the beaten path, and choosing the right accommodation for you.

9 Tips for Solo Travel in Washington DC

1. Don’t Rent a Car

Driving in DC is difficult, parking is tight, and there are so many amazing public transportation options that you can just eliminate the car rental headache.

Uber is also a plentiful option.  You don’t need to rent a car on your DC Itinerary!

Tip: I do recommend renting a car if you are planning on taking any Day Trips from DC.  A car will be essential to visit neighboring mountain escapes, especially for some of the best hiking near DC

2. Use Public Transportation

There are amazing public transportation options in DC.

You can go straight from Capitol Hill to BWI Airport on the MARC Penn Line Train!

3. Pack Light

You don’t need to fill your suitcase with an abundance of items when visiting Washington DC.  Packing light allows you to navigate public transportation seamlessly with your travel backpack or suitcase.

I recommend layering basics for versatile outfits that you can wear multiple times.

4. Meet Friends on a Free Walking Tour

Free walking tours are my favorite way to connect with other travelers when visiting a new place.

However, tours are not necessary in DC.  You can easily explore the top monuments on your own by wandering the National Mall and walking through Capitol Hill.

All of the monuments and most of the museums in DC are free.

If you prefer tours and traveling in a group, there are plenty of highly-rated tours in DC.  I have not personally taken any of these tours, because I always travel with my local friends who show me around the area.

5. Save Money at Free Museums

Almost all of the historical museums in DC are free!

This is an amazing way to maximize your time without spending a penny.

Entering some monuments like the Library of Congress requires a timed entry ticket, but no purchase.

6. Free Monuments

Almost all of the historical monuments in DC are free as well!  Seriously, DC is such a win when it comes to budget travel.

You can spend 24 hours in DC or more without spending a dime on entertainment.

7. Visit Parks

Franklin Park

There are tons of outdoor activities in DC and almost all of these are free.  Visiting local parks is another amazing money-saving solo travel tip in DC!

Most beloved include Theodore Roosevelt Island, Rock Creek Park, and walking the C&O Canal.

Tip: Consider renting a bike to elevate your experience.

8. Get off the Beaten Path

I recommend exploring at least one thing to do off the beaten path in DC.

This lets you explore the city beyond the top monuments and museum attractions.  You can easily take public transportation or an Uber to the colonial neighborhoods of Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria.

Another personal favorite is the Culture House- the beautiful old church building is splashed with rainbow colors on the outside, and features a rotating art gallery inside.

9. Choose the Right Accommodation for You

Some solo travelers love staying at hostels to connect with fellow travelers and to make friends.  Hostels are also a great budget alternative to hotels.

However, you may enjoy the solitude of relaxing after a packed day of monuments, local parks and neighborhoods, possibly hiking, and more.  In this case, I recommend a private bedroom in a hostel or staying at a budget-friendly hotel.

Conclusion

Exploring DC as a solo traveler is both affordable and enriching. With many free museums and parks, you can dive into the city’s history and natural beauty without breaking the bank.

Venturing off the beaten path opens up unique experiences, like the vibrant Culture House, which offers a fresh perspective beyond the usual tourist spots.

Choosing the right accommodation, whether a social hostel or a peaceful budget hotel, enhances your solo DC itinerary. Embrace the charm and diversity of DC!
