10 Summer Things to Do Outdoors in Chicago [2025]

in , ,

Are you looking for things to do outdoors in Chicago this summer?  This is the guide for you!

Chicago’s bustling, urban city is also known for its green spaces and urban walking areas.  Its location along Lake Michigan also makes it a prime spot for outdoor water activities.

Picture yourself wandering through Grant Park, where vibrant flowers bloom amidst the lush greenery. Lake Michigan glistens in the distance, inviting you to enjoy a refreshing kayak ride or a stroll along the shoreline.

Some of the best summer things to do outdoors in Chicago are the Chicago Riverwalk, Free Summer Concert Series, Renting a boat on Lake Michigan, North Avenue or Ohio Street Beaches, outdoor concerts, neighborhood farmer’s markets, and summer festivals.

10 Things To Do in Chicago This Summer

1. Make a Splash at Millennium Park

Millennium Park’s water monuments are a great way to get cool in between the heat of Chicago’s summer sun!

Afterward, walk around famous Chicago tourist attractions like The Bean or Buckingham Fountain at Grant Park.

Visiting Millennium Park should be on any top Chicago itinerary

2. Kayaking the Chicago River

Kayaking is a top Midwest summer activity.  It’s even more unique along the infamous Chicago River!

This gives a whole different vantage point of the city.

3. Free Summer Festivals

There are tons of neighborhood festivals throughout the city.  Craft Markets and art walks are common in neighborhoods like Fulton Market, Lincoln Park, and more.

Sundays on State Street is one of my favorite summer festivals.  A portion of Chicago’s famous State Street is closed down for live music on stage, street food, and local artisan tents.

4. Free Summer Movies

There is a free movie in Millennium Park every Tuesday night as part of their annual Free Concert Series.  Bring your lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy the show!

Gallagher Way outside of Wrigley Field hosts similar free summer movies as well.

Films vary from classic favorites to new releases, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Arrive early to secure a good spot and enjoy the pre-movie activities or refreshments available from local vendors.

5. Boat Ride

Alternatively, you could also hop on a famous Chicago Architecture Tour and cruise the Chicago River with an informational guide.

The Chicago Architecture Tour offers an insightful journey through the city’s iconic skyline. It highlights architectural marvels from different eras, providing context and stories behind each structure.

These tours typically last 60-90 minutes and include experienced guides who bring the city’s history to life. It’s a must-do for anyone interested in urban design.

This is at the top of my list of things I need to experience in Chicago!

6. North Avenue Beach or Ohio Street Beach

I think Chicago’s free beaches are one of the most scenic things the city has to offer!

North Avenue Beach is renowned for its bustling atmosphere, featuring volleyball courts, bike rentals, and incredible views of the Chicago skyline.

It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists to soak up the sun and enjoy the water.

Ohio Street Beach, on the other hand, offers a more relaxed vibe and is perfect for a swim or a peaceful walk along the lake. Both beaches are equipped with lifeguards during certain hours.

The beaches open for the season annually over Memorial Day Weekend.  It’s a great way to wind down any Chicago weekend.

The beaches also offer boat rentals for a fee.

7. Concert at Northerly Island or Salt Shed

Northerly Island is located along the Burnham Harbor of Lake Michigan.

This beautiful park makes for great winter things to do in Chicago like snowshoeing, but the walking trails are perfect for summer days.

The north end of the park features its famous concert venues.  With views of Chicago skyscrapers, while listening to your favorite bands, you’re in for a great treat!

8. Oz Park

Oz Park is one of the most random things to do in Chicago.  The 13-acre park located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park Neighborhood features 4 different monuments from the famous Wizard of Oz film.

As you stroll through the park on a summer day, be on the lookout for some familiar faces like The Tin Man, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Dorothy and Toto.

9. Farmers Markets

Visiting the local farmers’ markets of various neighborhoods is one of the many great local things to do in Chicago!

My favorite Farmer’s Market so far is in Lincoln Park.  It is ginormous, features local artists in action, and is so close to tons of other city activities.  It’s also a very short walk away from Lake Michigan.

10. Climbing Wall at Maggie Daley Park

The climbing wall at the famous Maggie Daley Park opens at the end of May and closes in early fall.

I am shocked I haven’t yet tried it out myself because I love rock climbing!

The climbing wall has specific hours and price restrictions on the Maggie Daley Park website.  I recommend checking here for more detailed information about seasonal hours, opening dates, and costs.

Conclusion

Chicago offers a vibrant array of outdoor activities during the summer.

Oz Park invites you on a whimsical journey with its iconic Wizard of Oz statues.

Farmers markets, particularly Lincoln Park’s, provide a delightful blend of local produce and artistry in proximity to the lake.

Rock climbing enthusiasts will find Maggie Daley Park’s climbing wall an exciting challenge as it opens its doors for adventure.

These sites capture the essence of enjoying the great outdoors and its city bustle!

Come explore Chicago’s summer wonders and make unforgettable memories!

Spread the love
