Looking for the best things to do in Agios Nikolaos? This is the guide for you! I spent ten days on the gorgeous island of Crete and cannot wait for a return trip to Greece.
Agios Nikolaos is located on the East side of the island, 45 minutes by car or bus from Heraklion.
The quaint town is popular among local vacationers and international tourists alike. I liked the relaxed vibe on town and felt like I was on a classic vacation. There are tons of water-side restaurants and shops, of course surrounded by gorgeous mountain views.
Some of the best things to do in Agios Nikolaos include shopping, relaxing at beachside restaurants, enjoying the classic views, strolling Lake Voulismeni, exploring local art, travel to local villages, a half day trip to Spinalonga Island, or the extravagance of Elounda.
1. Shopping

Perhaps the most common thing to do in Agios Nikolaos is to enjoy downtown shopping!
The city comes to life over the summer, with shops spilling open in its lively downtown atmosphere.
Shopping in Agios Nikoloas ranges from high-end boutiques to smaller souvenir shops where you can pick up a hat or sunscreen you forgot at home.
3. Relaxing at Beachside Restaurants

There are tons of restaurants in Agios Nikolaos overlooking the water! My favorite are along the beach. The mountain formations above the water slightly reminded me of the views in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Maybe that’s a stretch, but it gave me the same feeling of tranquility.
3. Classic Views

I took some of my best photos on my entire Crete trip in Agios Nikolaos.
My favorite view from up above is overlooking Lake Voulismeni, which you can search for “Bar Estrella Dam Barcelona 1876“ or “Miagamis Bar” to get there easily.
Bar Estrella is literally right at the top, and Miagamis is just up the staircase from the walk along the perimeter to the top.
I also loved the views from our hotel rooftop at Ikaros Art Hotel. This was an ideal, no-frills budget option located in the heart of town.
Some of the best classic views from Agios Nikolaos can be found from:
- Rooftop Restaurants or Hotels
- Top of Lake Voulismeni
4. Lake Voulismeni
Lake Voulismeni is a focal point in town, and area attractions are commonly described by their proximity to “the lake”.
Strolling the lake makes for a relaxing afternoon. It’s quite small and you can walk around the entire thing in about 5 minutes. Tons of restaurants line the lake, and it even lights up at night (literally!)
My favorite view over the lake is next to Miagamis Bar. There is a small cafe and a few shops at the top.
You can alternately get here from walking the perimeter of the town, instead of up the lake. This is the longer route, but you’ll find more restaurants and shops along the way.

5. Local Art

The local art around Agios Nikolaos is underrated! It offers a mix of contemporary and traditional Crete-inspired works.
Among the most notable features are the staircase murals that decorate various stairways throughout the town. The most famous is the “Stairs of Creativity” (also called “The Artistic Staircase”), a vibrant mural that can be found near the town center.
Two of the most famous statues with roots in Greek Mythology are along the Kitroplatia Beach.
6. Hang Out At The Beach

Hanging out at the beach in Agios Nikolaos is a fantastic way to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of Crete. Kitroplatia Beach, located right in the town center, offers easy access to crystal-clear waters and a relaxing atmosphere.
The beach is free to visit, though you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas for comfort.
While the beach is conveniently located, it can get busier during peak tourist season, so arriving early or later in the day can provide a more peaceful experience.
There are smaller, luxurious beaches the closer you get to Elounda. Many of these beaches are private and require a fee.
7 Local Villages
Villages like Plaka and Margarites are just a short drive away and provide a peaceful contrast to the bustling town.
A day or half-day trip is usually sufficient to visit one or two villages, allowing time to stroll through narrow streets, enjoy local tavernas, and admire traditional architecture.
You can get to the villages by renting a car or hiring a taxi.
While some travelers prefer staying overnight in these quiet villages for a more immersive experience, a day trip is often enough to enjoy their beauty and charm without the need for an extended stay.
8. Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga island is one of the most popular things to do in Agios Nikolaos. Just a short boat ride from the town, the island is steeped in history, once serving as a leper colony and a strategic Venetian fortress.
Exploring its narrow alleys, abandoned houses, and impressive fortifications offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.
The island’s eerie yet captivating atmosphere, combined with its stunning views of the surrounding sea and coastline, makes it a memorable excursion.
Tourist ships depart the main port multiple times per day. You can easily buy your tickets online or at the port itself. I would not recommend paying more than $20 for a budget tour.
You will need to pay the 8 Euro entrance fee at Spinalonga Island upon arrival. This fee is typically not covered in most tours and will be a separate charge.
9. Elounda
Elounda is the extravagant neighbor to Agios Nikolaos. Visiting Elounda is a great option for travelers seeking a more tranquil, upscale experience near Agios Nikolaos.
Known for its luxury resorts, stunning beaches, and excellent dining, it’s perfect for those looking to relax and indulge. Couples, honeymooners, and those wanting a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere will particularly enjoy Elounda.
However, if you’re on a tight budget or prefer a livelier, more affordable destination, you should stay in Agios Nikoloas and consider visiting Elounda for a couple of hours.
It’s so close to Agios Nikolaos, we were able to take a walking path almost all the way there!
