Winter in Chicago is one of the most beautiful times of the year, with holiday lights everywhere and tons of festivities.  But it can be tricky to figure out what is open when you are visiting on Christmas Day.

This guide features some of the top Chicago activities open on Christmas Day.

Some of the best things to do in Chicago on Christmas Day are Lincoln Park Conservatory, Maggie Daley Skating Ribbon, Skydeck Chicago, Art on The Mart, Christmas Day Brunch Cruise, Frida Room, Christmas Day Brucnh at State and Lake Chicago Tavern or NoMI, and Hard Rock Cafe.

Chicago on Christmas Day: Activities

1. Lincoln Park and Garfield Park Conservatory

Chicago’s conservatories are one of my favorite ways to relax, especially during the holiday season.  Lincoln Park Conservatory features holiday decorations like Christmas Lights throughout the greenhouse.

I love Garfield Park Conservatory because it is even bigger and allows you to explore off the beaten path.

These are two amazing free Chicago winter activities that allow you to experience the best of the city without spending a dime.

Tip: Both conservatories will be closed on Christmas Eve

2. Maggie Daley Skating Ribbon

Ice Skating in Downtown Chicago is certainly a way to top off your Christmas Day festivities.

Ice Skating in Chicago’s quintessential city center is definitely one of the best things to do in Winter in Chicago!

I recommend packing getting ideas from my Chicago winter packing list to stay warm!

Note: This is the only public ice skating rink open on Christmas Day.

3. Skydeck Chicago

Skydeck Chicago is an incredible way to see the city from up above!  It’s also the perfect indoor activity to stay warm in Chicago’s brisk weather, and you can truly add it to any city itinerary.

Over 1,300 floors high, Skydeck begins with an immersive museum on its lower level.  Tons of photo opportunities are available as you learn about the history of Chicago from Second City Comedy to deep dish pizza.

The views overlooking the city at the top are absolutely incredible.  Your ticket also features about 1 minute of standing (or sitting!) in a glass box over Chicago.

Tip: I do not recommend this activity if you are afraid of heights.

4. Art On The Mart

Art on The Mart is a free activity in Chicago that takes place year-round.  The Merchandise Mart can be seen from the Chicago Riverwalk.  It features new seasonal light displays highlighting local artists and focusing on holiday events.

It’s one of the best ways to see free holiday lights in Chicago

5. Christmas Day Brunch Cruise

The Christmas Day Brunch Cruise offers a spectacular experience as you take in breathtaking skyline views from a glass boat.

I have taken one cruise during New Year’s in Chicago and it was a party experience!  However, Christmas brunch is considered an upscale experience.

This upscale dining event provides a unique way to experience the city on Christmas.

However, it comes with a price tag that reflects its exclusivity and the memorable experience it promises.

Tip: Take an Architecture Cruise to save money on a different day

6. Take a Winter Road Trip

If you’re looking to get out of the city, consider a winter road trip from Chicago.

There are beautiful neighboring places to hike like Starved Rock State Park and Indiana Dunes National Park.

Both parks are open to the public on Christmas day.  However, visitors centers will be closed.

Take safety precautions in advance like downloading offline maps and informing others of your itinerary.

The Frida Room in Pilsen is a popular spot for enjoying a Christmas Day brunch with a Mexican American flair.

Known for its traditional dishes, the menu includes delicious options like Molletes and Huevos a La Mexicana.

Frida Room would be my top choice for brunch in Chicago on Christmas Day!

It doesn’t break the bank, I love Mexican food, and it supports a small, local business.

Located in the heart of Downtown Chicago, State and Lake Chicago Tavern offers an upscale Christmas brunch experience characterized by its American Tavern flair.
