2-Day Montenegro Itinerary

Looking for a 2-day Montenegro Itinerary?

This is the guide for you!

Montenegro is a small country on the Adriatic coast in southeastern Europe. Visitors come for its mix of medieval towns, turquoise bays, glacial lakes, and rugged mountains.

I visited Montenegro during a longer Balkan trip and was dazzled by this small country. I had never heard of it before, but I’m so glad I decided to visit!

This 2-day itinerary hits the country’s top highlights.  From the medieval charm of Kotor’s Old Town to the rugged beauty of Durmitor National Park.

You’ll explore winding cobblestone streets, taste local specialties, cruise the dazzling Bay of Kotor, and take in breathtaking mountain views.

It’s a quick trip, but one packed with variety, scenery, and unforgettable adventure!

2-Day Montenegro Itinerary

Day 1: Bay of Kotor

1. Kotor Old Town

Start your morning wandering through Kotor’s medieval Old Town. Its stone walls, cobblestone lanes, and historic charm make it one of the most picturesque places on the Adriatic coast.

It’s by far one of the best things to do in Kotor!

Try to visit early before the cruise ships arrive—crowds fill the narrow streets fast.

Take time to get lost in the maze of alleys, peek into small squares, and soak in the mix of Venetian and Balkan architecture.

2. Kotor Market

Just outside the Old Town walls, the local market gives you a glimpse of daily life.

It’s small but lively, packed with stands selling fresh fruit, local cheese, olives, and honey.

It’s also a great stop for inexpensive snacks or souvenirs to take home.

Tip: Bring cash- most market stalls do not accept credit cards.

3. Kotor Food Tour

If you enjoy learning about culture through food, join a local food tour.

A guide will lead you through hidden restaurants and family-run spots serving Montenegrin favorites like prosciutto, seafood, and local wine.

It’s a relaxed way to spend a few hours and connect more deeply with the region’s traditions.

4. Blue Cave Tour

Spend your afternoon on the water with a Blue Cave boat tour. It’s one of the most popular things to do on any Montenegro itinerary.

You’ll cruise past the Bay of Kotor’s coastal towns and hidden coves before reaching the glowing, turquoise cave itself—a stunning natural highlight.

Many tours include time for swimming or short stops in nearby villages, making it a refreshing and scenic way to end your first day.

Day 2: Durmitor Day Trip

If you only have two days in Montenegro, taking a day tour to Durmitor National Park might be your best option.

If you can figure it out logistically, or you have more time, then rent a car for added flexibility.

I could have spent days relaxing in the mountains of Durmitor and been completely happy with it!

If you choose a day tour, these are some popular stops on the trip:

1. Black Lake

This glacial lake is the most famous spot in Durmitor and the easiest to reach.

Surrounded by pine forests and high peaks, it’s perfect for a short walk or coffee break by the shore. The reflections on the water are stunning in the morning light.

2. Tara Bridge

Stop at the Tara Bridge for jaw-dropping views of the Tara River Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Europe.

The bridge sits high above the turquoise river and offers photo opportunities in every direction.

For a bit of adventure, you can even zipline across the canyon before continuing your drive.

3. Durmitor Ring Drive

The Durmitor Ring Drive, to me, is a non-negotiable on any day tour you choose.

You don’t need to complete the entire loop to enjoy the incredible scenery.

This place is the definition of mountains for days!

Conclusion

Two days in Montenegro is just enough to see the country’s best contrasts- coastal charm and mountain scenery.

You’ll explore Kotor’s old streets, sail across the bay, and end your trip surrounded by Durmitor’s rugged peaks.

Short but unforgettable, this itinerary shows why Montenegro deserves a spot on any Balkan trip.
