Some of the best things to do for free in Scottsdale are hiking at Pinnacle Peak, McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Camelback Mountain, Paradise or Paradise Valley viewpoints, Scottsdale Waterfront, Old Town Scottsdale, Scottsdale Farmer’s Market, Cosanti, and the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.
10 Free Things To Do in Scottsdale
1. McDowell Sonoran Preserve
McDowell Sonoran Preserve features some of the best hikes in the area like Tom’s Thumb Trail.
McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a vast, protected desert area open daily from sunrise to sunset. Although there is no visitors center, it offers numerous trailheads with over 200 miles of hiking opportunities.

Camelback Mountain is by far one of the most famous and popular hikes in the greater Phoenix area!
It’s also super challenging. I recommend wearing your most supportive hiking shoes or boots because the trail is rocky and extremely steep. (This is the type of terrain where rolling your ankle is common).
The trail provides amazing panoramic views of the surrounding city and desert landscape. Its red rock formations remind me ever so slightly of hiking in Sedona!
3. Pinnacle Peak Park
Pinnacle Peak Park is one of the best free things to do in Scottsdale! It is known for its singular trail, Pinnacle Peak.
This is a 4-mile out-and-back trail.
There are picnic tables and bathrooms located at the trail entrance. There are no amenities along the trail itself. As always, it’s extra important to pack plenty of water on any desert hiking.

4. Paradise Viewpoint
One of my favorite free things to do in Scottsdale is enjoy the incredible viewpoints. I recently discovered Paradise Viewpoint located in the neighborhood of Paradise.
Paradise is located at the top of a huge, winding hill. Its elevation gives it beautiful views over Scottsdale and the surrounding mountains like Camelback.
5. Paradise Valley Viewpoint
Paradise Valley Viewpoint is located 10 minutes by car from the Paradise neighborhood. The viewpoint names are almost the same, but they are different!
Paradise Valley has incredible valley views. This drive is paved but located along the edge of a mountain.
You can also make a stop at the historic Normal Lykes House on the way if it’s open!

6. Scottsdale Waterfront
The Scottsdale Waterfront is a vibrant and scenic area in Downtown Scottsdale, known for its picturesque canal and modern urban design.
