10 Thanksgiving Break Ideas For Teachers in 2025

Are you looking for the best Thanksgiving break ideas for teachers in 2025?  Allow this round-up guide to serve as your inspiration for Thanksgiving break travel this year!

As a fellow teacher, I can tell you firsthand how much I value my time off to travel and dive into new experiences.

Thanksgiving break offers teachers an opportunity to relax and recharge before the holiday season kicks into full gear. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, a cultural adventure, or a festive city escape, there are plenty of destinations that are perfect for a short getaway.

Whether you are traveling for the holiday with your family, solo, or with friends, Thanksgiving break can be a great opportunity to maximize your time off and travel to new destinations.

Some of the best Thanksgiving break ideas for teachers in 2025 are Mexico City, Guatemala, Quito, Colombia, San Juan, Asheville, Santa Fe, Sedona, Chicago, and Charleston.

Thanksgiving Break Ideas for Teachers: Latin America

1. Mexico City

Mexico City is one of my favorite Thanksgiving breaks! It is the perfect metropolitan city, bustling with lively culture and historical activities.

I traveled solo to Mexico City during Thanksgiving Break a few years ago and highly recommend this location to others.

It’s particularly great over Thanksgiving Break because United States travelers don’t need to travel far.  Many teachers have 3 days off for Thanksgiving break instead of the full school week, so traveling somewhere a little closer to home allows you to maximize your travel time and not your time spent in transit!

You can also find direct flights to Mexico City from many major cities across the United States, like Chicago and New York.

This is also a low tourism season in Mexico City, so crowds will not be unbearable.  However, you’ll definitely want to book certain attractions early, like Frida Kahlo’s House.  It’s almost impossible to get tickets at the door.

2. Guatemala

I talk about my solo trip to Guatemala so frequently that it’s probably annoying.  Its Central America location also makes it close enough to the United States to ensure you are not spending way too long in transit when traveling for a shorter break.

Some of the most beautiful sites in Guatemala include Antigua, towns along Lake Atitlan, and the Pacaya and Acatenango Volcanoes.

For Thanksgiving Break, I recommend basing the first part of your trip out of Antigua and the second part of your trip in Lake Atitlan.

3. Quito, Ecuador

Spending a few days in Ecuador’s capital city of Quito paired with a few day trips makes for an excellent Thanksgiving break for teachers!

Thanks to its location near the equator, Quito experiences mild temperatures year-round.  Comfortable weather is sure to be in store!

Some of my favorite things to do in Quito include: visiting Middle of The World City (where you can literally stand on the equator line!), shopping at Mercado Central, and seeing city views from El Panecillo.

Safety Note: It is considered dangerous to walk to the top of El Panecillo.  Arrange for a drop-off at the top or join a tour.

4. Colombia

Colombia is an absolutely beautiful destination in South America!  For Thanksgiving break, I recommend basing yourself out of one major area: Cartagena, Medellin, or Bogota.

It’s possible to take fun day trips from each location or even combine two major cities.

5. San Juan, Puerto Rico

A woman in a patterned dress stands on the weathered ramparts of El Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the ocean in the background, a historical highlight on any Puerto Rico itinerary.

Puerto Rico is an incredible island that offers a little bit of everything!  The culture is amazing, the beaches are phenomenal, and there are plenty of mountains and tropical waterfalls for the outdoor lovers.  Its extremely diverse landscape has something for everyone!

The island’s location is not far from the continental United States, and it provides several direct flight options, ensuring you spend more time enjoying your trip and less time in transit.

It’s easy to enjoy the entire break basing yourself out of San Juan.  Alternatively, you can rent a car for a couple of days to explore the island at your own pace and get off the beaten path to towns like Yauco or go kayaking at Gilligans Island.

6. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is ideal for teachers seeking a peaceful escape with a mix of relaxation and outdoor adventure.

Over Thanksgiving, the vibrant arts scene, local craft breweries, and cozy mountain atmosphere make it a perfect spot for unwinding. Spend a day exploring the Biltmore Estate’s stunning decorations and the eclectic downtown atmosphere in Asheville.

You won’t want to miss the River Arts District, a converted industrial district where abandoned warehouses have been transformed into art galleries, hip coffee shops, and craft breweries.

My favorite thing to do in Asheville is spot breathtaking views along the infamous Blue Ridge Parkway.  There are so many amazing hikes and drive-up viewpoints.  From waterfalls to scenic mountain views, Asheville’s landscape is extremely memorable.

Santa Fe offers a unique blend of history, culture, and relaxation, making it perfect for a Thanksgiving break.

The city’s charming adobe architecture, art galleries, and rich Native American heritage create a peaceful yet stimulating environment.

Enjoy a stroll through the historic Plaza or visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. For a Thanksgiving twist, savor a locally-inspired feast at one of the town’s renowned restaurants.

With its tranquil vibe, Santa Fe is a fantastic destination for teachers to recharge while soaking in the culture.

8. Sedona, Arizona

Boynton Canyon Trail in Sedona

Sedona is a stunning retreat for teachers looking to rejuvenate over Thanksgiving break. Known for its striking red rock formations and spiritual energy, it’s the perfect destination for those seeking both relaxation and outdoor adventure.

I have visited more times than I can count and always find something new to do each time.

Explore the many hiking trails, like Cathedral Rock or Bell Rock, which offer spectacular views. You can also take a jeep tour through the rugged landscape or unwind at a spa.

The peaceful atmosphere and mild November weather make Sedona an ideal spot to recharge during a short break.  This is also a low season in Sedona, so you won’t be swamped with crowds!

9. Chicago

Chicago is a vibrant city that’s perfect for a Thanksgiving break filled with culture, entertainment, and the start of Christmas in Chicago!

During the holiday, teachers can enjoy the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and explore the city’s world-class museums like the Art Institute and the Field Museum.  Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago sees no shortage of festivities.

If you’re into architecture, take an iconic architecture river cruise or visit the Skydeck at Willis Tower for breathtaking views. Afterward, warm up with a classic deep-dish pizza or indulge in a Thanksgiving dinner at one of Chicago’s renowned restaurants.

The festive atmosphere and diverse activities make Chicago a dynamic spot for a memorable holiday retreat.
