Best Things to Do in Telluride, Colorado This Summer

in ,

Looking for the best things to do in Telluride this summer?  I got you!

This article covers the most unique summer things to do in Telluride, from outdoor adventures to relaxation and summer festivals.

Telluride is a gorgeous mountain town located in Southwest Colorado.  It’s most popular for its world-class winter skiing, but there is so much more to enjoy in Telluride.

Think wildflowers, waterfalls, blue skies, and cool mountain air. It’s a bit more upscale than nearby Ouray, but it still has that laid-back mountain town feel.

Summer is the perfect time to visit Telluride if you love hiking, scenic views, and festivals.

Whether you want adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, there’s something here for you.

Let’s plan your Telluride summer trip!

Best Summer Festivals & Events in Telluride (Summer 2026)

Summer Adventures in Telluride

1. Hike to Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls is one of the most famous things to do in Telluride, and one of the most popular hikes in the area!

As Colorado’s tallest free-falling waterfall, it’s especially powerful in early summer when snowmelt is at its peak.

You can hike, bike, or drive part of the way up, depending on your preference.  But the final stretch is steep and best done on foot.

The views over Telluride get better the higher you climb, making the effort worth your while.

Plan for 2-3 hours round trip and bring plenty of water, especially on warm afternoons.

Unfortunately, I was not able to access the falls during my visit, but I cannot wait to go on a return trip!

2. Hike the Jud Wiebe Memorial Trail

I absolutely love this Telluride trail!

You are hiking along the rim of the mountain, so you are seeing incredible mountain views the entire trail.

This comes with the drawback of full sun exposure and limited to no shade, so plan accordingly.  Sunscreen and a sunhat will be key!

I will definitely hike Jud Wiebe Memorial Trail again next time I’m in town.

3. Bear Creak Trail

Bear Creek Trail is one of the most popular hikes in Telluride, and it’s easy to see why.

The trail follows a creek through a forest before opening up to a beautiful waterfall at the end.

It’s a moderate hike that feels manageable for most people, and it’s a great option if you want something scenic without committing to a full-day adventure.

Tip: Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds.

4. Via Ferrata

If you’re looking for a little adrenaline, Telluride Via Ferrata is a summer must-do.

This protected climbing route uses steel cables, ladders, and rock ledges to guide you along dramatic cliffs above the town.

Talk about an adventure!

Summer is the best time to do the Telluride Via Ferrata.

Dry rock, long daylight hours, and clear mountain views make it an unforgettable experience.

5. Off-Roading on Immogene Pass

If you’re up for a little adventure, off-roading on Imogene Pass is one of the best things you can do in Telluride.

This high-alpine route connects Telluride to Ouray and is packed with views the entire way.

You can rent a Jeep or book a guided tour. Either way, expect narrow roads, big drop-offs, and incredible scenery. Summer is the best time to go when the trail is fully open.

The Immogene Pass is an alternative to the famous Million Dollar Highway… which I can also tell you, from firsthand experience, is absolutely amazing.

It is closed off in the winter and spring, so summer and fall are your opportunities to off-road in Telluride!

6. Alta Lakes

If you want those alpine lake views without the crowds, Alta Lakes is the spot.

It’s about a 30-minute drive from Telluride and feels way more remote.

In the summer, it’s perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking, or just relaxing by the water.

The mountains reflecting in the lake make this one of the most photogenic spots in Telluride.

7. Go Paragliding Over Telluride

If you want a truly unforgettable experience, paragliding over Telluride is hard to beat.

You’ll launch from the San Juan Mountains and glide over the town with insane views the entire time.

It’s definitely more of a splurge activity, but if you’re celebrating something or want a bucket-list moment, Telluride paragliding is it!

8. Ride Mountain Coaster or Bike Park in Mountain Village

For a mix of fun and adrenaline without a full-day hike, the Mountain Coaster and Bike Park in Mountain Village are perfect.

The coaster twists and turns through the trees, giving you a thrill with zero effort, while the bike park offers trails for all skill levels.

Summer is ideal because all lifts are running, the weather is perfect, and you can enjoy the alpine scenery without worrying about snow.

I love how easy it is to combine these activities with a gondola ride or lunch in the village for a full-day adventure.

Scenic & Relaxing Summer Things to Do in Telluride

1. Ride the Scenic Gondola (it’s free!)

Ride the free gondola in Telluride!

This is one of the best things to do during any season in Telluride, but especially in summer.

It connects Downtown Telluride to Mountain Village and runs all summer with incredible views the entire way.

2. Stroll Downtown Telluride

Strolling the charming downtown streets of Telluride with mountain views everywhere you go is undoubtedly a summer highlight.

The historic buildings, colorful storefronts, and mountain backdrop make it feel straight out of a postcard.

In the summer, it’s perfect for walking around, shopping, and grabbing a coffee or ice cream.

I recommend slowing down here and just taking it all in.  It’s a perfect Telluride photography spot!

3. Picnic at Town Park

Stop at Clarke’s Grocery store in town and pack yourself a picnic at Town Park!

I am obsessed with Clarke’s because the variety is amazing and the prices are great.

This is not typical of small mountain towns that typically have on small grocery store for the town.

As a vegetarian, I was so excited for variety and to have my Tofurkey back!  (if you know, you know).

Town Park is the heart of Telluride in the summer. It’s where locals and visitors hang out, picnic, and enjoy the mountain views.

Bonus: It’s also where many of the town’s festivals take place, so depending on when you visit, you might catch live music or an event. Bring a blanket and plan to stay awhile.

4. Drive Last Dollar Road

Last Dollar Road is one of the most underrated scenic drives near Telluride.

It’s especially beautiful in the summer when the fields are green, and wildflowers are blooming.

Best Summer Festivals in Telluride (Summer 2026)

Telluride is famous for its summer events, and these are some of the most memorable to plan around:

  • Telluride Food & Vine Festival (June 12–14, 2026) – A premier food and wine weekend with tastings, dinners, and epicurean experiences set against mountain scenery.
  • Telluride Bluegrass Festival (June 18–21, 2026) – One of the Rockies’ most iconic music festivals, drawing bluegrass and Americana artists to Telluride Town Park.
  • Telluride Jazz Festival (August 7–9, 2026) – A scenic outdoor jazz celebration with world‑class performances in Telluride Town Park.
  • Telluride Film Festival (Labor Day weekend, early September 2026) – A world‑renowned film festival showcasing premieres, screenings, and film culture (exact 2026 dates typically align with Labor Day weekend).

Conclusion

Telluride in the summer is the perfect mix of adventure, scenery, and small-town charm.

Whether you’re hiking to waterfalls, riding the gondola, or just relaxing in town, there is something for everyone.

I recommend planning ahead, especially during the peak summer season, and leaving room in your itinerary to slow down and take in the views.

That’s really what makes a summer trip to Telluride unforgettable!

Spread the love
